Adaptive Equipment Funding

This service can be comprehensive as there are many different types of adaptive equipment. Private insurance companies do not always cover such items; even if they are covered, it can take months to get the appropriate authorizations needed for approval. The Levi Miles Foundation works with medical equipment suppliers and families to provide adaptive equipment to promote a better quality of life.

Level Three Services require special funding. Either family, referring physicians, or social workers can complete applications. Please click the “Apply Now” button below and complete the application(s) for funding.

This service is especially for children who are not on state insurance plans. Private health insurance plans, however, vary considerably in coverage and payment limits. Most private insurance will only fund adaptive equipment when it is considered medically necessary and prescribed by a physician. Individual insurance policies and procedures must be followed, and equipment must fit within a covered category, such as durable medical equipment or rehabilitation services.

Medical necessity must be determined within the definitions of the policy. Pre-authorization or pre-approval is often required, and the insurance company may require that selected or in-network vendors be used. TLMF comes in when insurance denies or even, in some cases, partially denies coverage. The Board of Directors votes on funding, so all required paperwork and preliminary elements must be met before applications can be considered.
