Inclusive Playground

Quick Links

Hey y’all, we partnered with the City of Paris to develop a state-of-the-art inclusive playground at Ogburn Park in Paris, Tennessee. The Foundation launched this initiative in 2024, which plans to develop a playground in Henry County where ALL children can play together. The new playground will welcome children and families of all backgrounds and abilities. We have selected Playworld Preferred to provide the playground's inclusive design, equipment, and surfacing materials. The overall estimated cost of this project is $2,500,000. We want to personally invite you to leave a legacy with the purchase of or donation towards a piece of equipment/zone or installation. We would love to answer any questions you have and talk further about your investment.

This playground will be designed to remove physical and social barriers to inclusion and fit the community's unique needs. It will promote the development of social-emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being.

With love,
David and Shayna Miles

Steps to success

Step 1: Secure Funding

Goal: December 2024

Funding sources include personal and commercial donations and other grant opportunities. We aim to secure funds by the end of 2024, allowing us to construct the entire playground in one rather than multiple phases.

Development

Overview

The multi-acre facility is optimized for children of all ages and those young at heart.

Features Include:

  • • A wide range of purpose-built inclusive playground equipment
  • • Poured-in-place rubber surface for increased safety and security
  • • Ample seating and shade

Glide Zone

Here you can glide as if on a ship, race your friends on the zip line, or fly through the air like Superman. All the pieces in the Glide Zone provide motion and creativity. Surfacing is a combination of turf and poured-in-place rubber.

Music Zone

Young musicians and those alike come together to create a masterpiece to their beat at the Music Zone. This zone allows kids to engage in audible sensory play and play multiple instruments with friends while their dream of a garage band comes to life. Shade covers this zone, helping keep kids cool as they jam.

Slide Zone

We like to call this zone Slide City due to its sheer size. An 8-foot-wide walkway extends out over the natural contour of the ground to a massive platform where four slides are accessed. Every slide offers a slide-and-sit option so riders who require mobility assistance can wait safely to return to their equipment. The entire platform is shaded so kids waiting their turn can stay cool. This entire area is made complete with turf surfacing.

Spin Zone

What is it about spinning in circles that bring a smile to kids’ faces? The Spin Zone provides ample opportunities for kids to spin until they can’t see straight! This zone includes five pieces of equipment that kids of all ability levels can play on side by side. Not to worry when your child can no longer stand from spinning too much; this zone is built upon a poured-in-place rubber surfacing material. When overstimulation occurs, the Cozy Cocoon doubles as a safe place for kids to desensitize.

Swing Zone

There is no shortage of swings here. With over fourteen swings, consisting of belt swings, accessible swing chairs, saucer swings, and mommy-and-me swings, kids of all ages and abilities can soar through the air together. To keep things cool, shade cloths cover all the swings in this zone. For the daredevils out there, fear not, parents. This entire zone is situated over a poured-in-place rubber surfacing material.

Toddler Zone

This playground wouldn’t be complete without a Toddler Zone. This area provides hours of fun for all the crawlers and young walkers. There are several crawl tubes and close-to-the-ground climbers to keep these busybodies active. To keep toddlers' imaginations running wild, we also included several village-like structures to encourage inclusive play. There is no need to worry about grass stains in this zone, for the area sits on soft, cool turf.

Impact

Why Inclusion Matters

As parents of a precious child who lived half of his life with a rare disease and has education and careers that support inclusion, we understand more than most how to view something simple and make it accessible AND inclusive. Quality of life drives our mission and makes the world a better place in memory of our son, Levi Michael Miles. Levi lived every day to the fullest because we made sure everything was accessible to him as he began to lose physical abilities due to his rare disease. We want to ensure all children have the experiences we created for them, and one of them is having an inclusive playground in the community where we work and live.
